Who Will Be Champions If the Final Is Abandoned?

India and New Zealand are set to face off in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, March 9, in Dubai. But what happens if the match gets abandoned? What do ICC’s rules state in such a scenario?

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, New Zealand lost the final to England based on the boundary count rule after the match ended in a tie.

However, such a scenario is unlikely in the Champions Trophy final, as ICC’s new rules now dictate that if a white-ball match ends in a tie, a Super Over will be played. The Super Over will continue until one team emerges as the winner.

If rain washes out Sunday’s final, there is a reserve day on Monday. If the match cannot be played on the reserve day either, both teams will be declared joint champions. A similar situation occurred in the 2002 Champions Trophy final, where rain forced the match to be abandoned, and India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners. This rule remains unchanged for this edition.

India has been in outstanding form in this Champions Trophy, winning all their matches so far. In the group stage, they defeated Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand, followed by a semifinal victory against Australia.

New Zealand, on the other hand, lost only to India in the group stage but won against Pakistan and Bangladesh. In the semifinals, the Kiwis defeated South Africa. Now, the stage is set for the final showdown between India and New Zealand.
