West Indies Keep Series Alive with Super Over Thriller

West Indies kept the three-match series alive by clinching a dramatic win in the Super Over. They defeated Bangladesh by just one run, setting up the third ODI on October 23 as an unofficial final.

Chasing 11 runs in the Super Over, Bangladesh got off to a decent start but Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hasan couldn’t take their side over the line. Once again, Bangladesh fell agonizingly short at the finish. Coincidentally, the Bangladesh women’s team also suffered a last-over heartbreak in the Women’s World Cup yesterday.

In the Super Over, bowler Akeal Hosein began with a wide, followed by a no-ball on his first legal delivery. Soumya took a double off that ball but managed only a single off the free hit. Hosein bounced back well, bowling a dot to Saif Hasan and dismissing Soumya with a catch at the boundary. After a leg-bye on the fifth ball, Bangladesh needed 4 runs off the final delivery. Hosein bowled another wide, but with 3 required off the last ball, Saif could only manage a single — giving West Indies a 1-run victory.

Earlier, West Indies scored 10 runs in their Super Over. Mustafizur Rahman bowled well — conceding just a single off the first ball and removing Sherfane Rutherford on the second. He almost dismissed Brandon King too, but captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz dropped the catch at cover. Shai Hope finished the over with a boundary, taking West Indies to 10.

The match had gone to a Super Over after a dramatic final over in regulation play. West Indies needed 5 runs off 6 balls, while Bangladesh required 2 wickets. Saif Hasan bowled two consecutive dots to Akeal Hosein, heightening the tension. Singles off the next two balls left 3 runs needed from 2 deliveries. Saif then bowled Hosein for a duck, leaving West Indies needing 3 off the last ball. Khary Pierre lofted a catch, but wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan couldn’t hold on while running toward square leg — allowing Hope and Pierre to run two and tie the match.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Bangladesh posted 213/7, powered by a late cameo from Rishad Hossain, who smashed an unbeaten 39 off just 14 balls. Soumya Sarkar top-scored with 45 runs. In reply, West Indies, led by Shai Hope’s fighting fifty, matched the total exactly — 213 all out — taking the contest to a thrilling Super Over finish.
