Uganda made history by securing their first-ever win in a World Cup. Playing in their inaugural World Cup, they reached this milestone in their second match by defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG), making the day unforgettable. In a thrilling low-scoring match, Uganda clinched victory by 3 wickets.
In their second match of the ongoing World Cup on Thursday in Guyana, Uganda faced PNG. Thanks to the superb bowling from Uganda, PNG was all out for just 77 runs in 19.1 overs. In reply, the African nation achieved the target in 18.2 overs.
Both teams had an equal chance to claim their first World Cup victory. Although the competition was intense, PNG couldn’t hold on and their wait for a win on the global stage continues.
Franko Subugga led Uganda’s victory with a standout performance. At 43 years old, he had already made history by playing in the World Cup. He showcased his magic with the ball, taking 2 wickets for just 4 runs in his 4 overs, including 2 maidens. This set a record for the fewest runs conceded in T20 World Cup history.
Subugga wasn’t the only star for Uganda. Other bowlers like Ramjani, Keuta, and Miyagi also took two wickets each. Only three PNG batsmen managed to reach double figures, with Hiri Hiri scoring the highest with 15 runs, and both Siaka and Doriga contributing 12 runs each.
Chasing a modest target, Uganda found themselves in trouble early on, losing 3 wickets for just 6 runs. At one point, it seemed they might not pull through, as they were down to 26 for 6.
However, Riazat Ali Shah kept the dream alive, scoring 33 runs. Only Juma Miyagi, with 13 runs, managed to reach double figures among the other batsmen. Extras contributed the second-highest score of 15 runs.
Through small partnerships, Uganda eventually reached the target, winning by 3 wickets with 10 balls to spare. For PNG, Alei Nao took 2 wickets for 16 runs in 4 overs, while Norman Vanua also claimed 2 wickets for 19 runs in his 4 overs.
