Tomorrow, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will come face to face in a battle to save their seat for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, while Sri Lanka will also test their luck to reach the Semifinals of CWC 2023.
Bangladesh & Sri Lanka have had a problematic CWC 2023 so far. Both the teams had a forgettable tournament with multiple crushing defeats at their bags. With only two matches remaining, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka will aim to grab whatever is left for them in this World Cup.
Sri Lanka has met Bangladesh on several occasions in recent months. In the Asia Cup of 2023, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh twice. In contrast, Bangladesh managed to beat Sri Lanka in the CWC Warm-Up Match prior to the World Cup. However, both teams are struggling to find results in the current tournament.

In Men’s ODI World Cup Cricket, Bangladesh has never won against Sri Lanka in any of the last 3 encounters. Although the statistics are against Bangladesh, the current condition of both teams makes those records obsolete.
Result of the last four CWC Matches
1st ODI at Pietermaritzburg, 2003: Sri Lanka absolutely crushed Bangladesh on that occasion with a massive victory by 10 wickets. Chaminda Vaas’ incredible bowling performance ensured a batting disaster for Bangladesh. The Lankan fast bowler took 6 wickets for 25 runs. Sri Lanka cruised towards victory while chasing a poor target of 124 runs set by Bangladesh.
2nd ODI at Port of Spain, 2007: In this encounter, Sri Lanka yet again handed Bangladesh another monumental defeat by 118 runs. With the help of Sanath Jaysuriya’s 109 runs, Sri Lanka scored 318 runs in 50 Overs. Chasing the target, Bangladesh ended up managing only 112 in 37 Over while losing all wickets.
3rd ODI at Melbourne, 2015: On this occasion, a relatively better performing Bangladesh team managed to break down under pressure and bag another defeat. Facing Sri Lanka’s 332 runs, Bangladeshi batters piled up 240 for 10 wickets in 47 Overs. Middle-order batters tried to compensate for the top-order’s failure, but their efforts were futile.
4th ODI at Bristol, 2019: The match was abandoned due to heavy rain.

Bangladesh will desperately try to top Sri Lanka tomorrow as their chance to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy of 2025 is hanging by a thread. In contrast, Sri Lanka still has a theoretical chance to reach the Semifinal of this World Cup. Although it’s purely theoretical, Sri Lanka will hope to bounce back from the miserable defeat it faced against India in the last match.
