The IPL mega auction always brings a thrilling mix of anticipation and high-stakes spending. It’s where cricketers can go from lakhpatis to crorepatis overnight. However, many stars go unsold, adding a dramatic, cinematic feel to the event. This year, though, franchises submitted their retained player lists ahead of the auction, bringing surprises to the table.
Retention Submission Deadline
The last date to submit the retention list was Thursday, with all teams expected to submit it to the board by 5 PM IST. Each team has a budget cap of INR 120 crore for this IPL season. Franchisees must spend within this cap on retentions, with the remaining funds available for the auction.
Several teams have surprised with their retentions. Notably, one of IPL’s most successful teams, Mumbai Indians, has retained Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma. They now have INR 55 crore left for the auction after spending INR 65 crore on these retentions. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan and Tim David were not retained.
Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, leaving out Washington Sundar, Thangarasu Natarajan, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
