The rise and fall of Nagin Dance
Despite being a cricket-centric TV Channel, Star Spots is always busy promoting the Indian Cricket team. Although the bias is obvious, this time, they resurrected a controversial celebration that was often performed by a few members of the Bangladesh team back in 2018. The celebration, which goes by the name of “Nagin Dance,” received massive backlash on Social Media from cricket fans of this region. It was considered “insulting” as it didn’t resemble any mainstream Bangladeshi culture or cricket itself.
The majority of the Bangladeshi fans disliked this celebration for apparent reasons. Consequently, the celebration gradually faded after the Nidahas Trophy. However, in spite of the upcoming CWC 2023 match of India vs Bangladesh on October 19th, Star Sports has released a promotional video that mocks the Bangladeshi fans.
In the video, an apparently “irritating” Bangladeshi fan was performing the Nagin Dance while two very surprisingly calm Indian fans tried to give him a “fact” check. The video has over 40 thousand views so far.
Bangladesh faced India four times in CWC and won one match in 2007. So far, the score is 3-1 in favor of India. Outside of the CWC arena, Bangladesh beat India three times in the last five encounters. Fans are expecting a highly competitive India-Bangladesh match. Perhaps such expectations from the fans stirred Star Sports to build more hype surrounding the match.
