Former Indian captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has commented that all kinds of ties with Pakistan should be severed following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 people. He made this remark while speaking to journalists in Kolkata.
On Friday, Sourav Ganguly faced the media in Kolkata. When asked about the Pahalgam terrorist attack, he urged that India should sever all cricketing ties with Pakistan.
The former Indian captain said, “One hundred percent, this (cutting ties with Pakistan) should be done. Strict action is necessary. This is not a joke that such incidents will keep happening every year.”
Political tensions between India and Pakistan have been longstanding. Since India’s tour of Pakistan for the 2008 Asia Cup, India has not traveled to Pakistan again. The last bilateral series between the two countries took place in the 2012–13 season, when Pakistan toured India for limited-overs matches. In the recently held ICC Champions Trophy, India, instead of touring Pakistan, played all their matches in Dubai under a hybrid model.
Recently, at least 26 people were killed in a terrorist attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam. Following this, India took several stern measures against Pakistan, including suspending the water-sharing agreement, closing borders, downgrading diplomatic relations, and canceling visas issued to Pakistani citizens.
In retaliation, Pakistan also expelled Indian diplomats, closed the border, and announced the cancellation of visas. Islamabad has stated that any attempt to block the flow of water from the Indus River would be considered an “act of war.”
