Bangladesh’s achievements in global tournaments have been quite ordinary. However, their biggest achievement so far has come in the Champions Trophy. In the most recent edition of the tournament in 2017, Bangladesh reached the semi-finals.
This time, the dream is even bigger. The Tigers aim to achieve greater success. Bangladesh is expected to perform well in this edition, and interim coach Phil Simmons is confident about winning the title.
The new edition of the Champions Trophy will commence in Pakistan on February 19. As the tournament approaches, all eight participating teams are in their final preparation stages. Bangladesh also started its training camp in Mirpur on Sunday.
On Monday (February 10), Simmons faced the media there. He stated, “There is a possibility of doing well in the Champions Trophy. If we play our best cricket, nothing is impossible. If I didn’t believe in winning the trophy, I wouldn’t be here.”
Despite his optimism about winning the trophy, Simmons believes Bangladesh is not having the best possible preparation. He said, “I agree that we are not getting the best preparation before the Champions Trophy. However, we have been involved in white-ball cricket. Now, we will focus on preparation. We have a six-day training camp.”
Meanwhile, the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) lasted for about one and a half months. Naturally, the long tournament took a physical toll on the players. Additionally, they now have to transition from T20 to One Day Internationals (ODIs), which is another factor to consider.
However, Simmons believes this will not have any impact. He said, “We have had two days of practice. There has been no discussion about the BPL. The players are now focusing on batting for long periods and bowling in the right areas to adapt to 50-over cricket. I don’t think the BPL will have any effect on them.”
