The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently released the ODI rankings. However, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s name was not on the list, which has sparked significant discussions. Since he has not retired from ODIs, his name was expected to be on the rankings. However, in the recently published rankings, Shakib’s name was missing.
Since Shakib has retired from T20s, his name was removed from that format accordingly.
Many were surprised by the removal of Shakib’s name from the ODI rankings. According to ICC rules, if a player does not play an ODI for more than a year, their name is removed from the rankings. Shakib last played an ODI match on November 6, 2023, against Sri Lanka, which was part of the ODI World Cup. Although Bangladesh’s next match was against Australia, he could not play due to injury. Since then, despite Bangladesh playing several series, Shakib was not seen in action. As a result, his name was excluded from the rankings due to not playing for more than a year.
Currently, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi is at the top of the ODI all-rounder rankings, followed by Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza in second place, Rashid Khan in third, and Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz in fourth. Shakib can re-enter the rankings if he plays just one match.
According to Shakib’s plans, he intends to retire from ODI cricket after playing in the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, uncertainty has arisen following his recent involvement in political events. It is still uncertain whether Shakib will play in the ODI series during Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies. If that is the case, the Champions Trophy might be his last ODI series.
