In the lead-up to the third Test against England, India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stands prominently with an outstanding record. With a desire to become the highest wicket-taker at home with just five wickets away, the 37-year-old spinner has set his sights on Anil Kumble’s record.
Having played 63 Tests at home, Ashwin has already taken 350 wickets, holding the record for the highest number of wickets taken on home soil. He has taken five or more wickets in an innings 25 times and has achieved 10 or more wickets in a match seven times. He also boasts the accolade of taking 10 wickets in an innings once in Tests.
Ashwin’s current tally of wickets stands at 346, fewer than Kumble’s 57 matches. He has taken five or more wickets in an innings 26 times and has taken 10 or more wickets in a match six times.
As an all-rounder, Ashwin is on the verge of another milestone. With 97 Tests under his belt, he is just one wicket shy of reaching the 500-wicket mark. His current tally stands at 499.
Furthermore, if he manages to take three more wickets against England, he will achieve yet another milestone. As the first Indian bowler, he will have taken 100 wickets against England. On the flip side, England’s James Anderson has surpassed the milestone of 100 wickets against India.
