Pakistan cricket is undergoing another coaching change. The national selector and former bowler, Aaqib Javed, is set to take charge of the white-ball format. Jason Gillespie is being relieved of his white-ball coaching duties and will remain as the coach for the red-ball format.
On Monday, Pakistan will play its final T20 match against Australia. From there, the team will head directly to Harare, Zimbabwe, where they will play three One-Day Internationals and three T20 matches. Javed will join the team as the new coach in Harare.
A source from the Pakistan Cricket Board informed the news agency that Javed was initially reluctant to take on the coaching responsibilities but agreed after being persuaded by Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Currently, Javed is the national selector, and it is uncertain whether he will continue in that role.
Javed has prior experience working as the coach of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League. He has also previously served as the bowling coach for both Sri Lanka and Pakistan and has managed coaching duties for Pakistan’s Under-19 team.
Before the Australia tour, Gary Kirsten unexpectedly resigned from his white-ball coaching role, making numerous complaints against the Pakistan Board. Test team coach Gillespie was temporarily assigned the white-ball coaching duties for the Australia series.
However, he is unwilling to permanently take on the white-ball coaching role due to family commitments. Therefore, Javed has been appointed.
