Jamie Overton has been called up to England’s squad for the fifth and final Test of the series against India at The Oval. The English pacer has recently played in the County Championship for Surrey. This is the only change England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made to the squad from the Old Trafford Test.
India remain alive in the series after a hard-fought draw in that match. England have played with a fairly consistent bowling attack throughout the previous four Tests of the series. After the second Test, they replaced Josh Tongue with Jofra Archer in the squad. Liam Dawson was brought in as a replacement for the injured Shoaib Bashir.
So far, Chris Woakes has bowled the most among both teams’ bowlers, delivering a total of 167 overs. Brydon Carse has bowled 155 overs, while England captain Ben Stokes has bowled 140 overs. There was speculation that Gus Atkinson might feature towards the end of the series.
He proved his fitness by playing in the second XI for Surrey, so he could be brought in as a replacement for Woakes. Josh Tongue, England’s second-highest wicket-taker in the series with 11 wickets, is also under consideration. If selected, Jamie Overton would play his first Test since 2022.
England squad for the Oval Test: Ben Stokes (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes.
