Due to reasons undisclosed, Shakib Al Hasan has been replaced as the captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup moments. Shakib Al Hasan, who had been leading in both formats previously, relinquishes the captaincy of the One Day format, returning Bangladesh to another captain’s era.
Although it was already known that he would not be the captain after the World Cup, Shakib had indicated that it would only be for the One Day format. Now, the Tiger all-rounder has stepped down as captain in all three formats. Taking his place is Najmul Hossain Shanto.
At the end of the board meeting on Monday, BCB president Nazmul Hossain Papon told the media, “What has been said with him till now; his eye problem hasn’t gone away yet. That’s why we have Sri Lanka series ahead of us, then another series; then the World Cup. Actually, we are not sure about his availability.”
Papon added, “Of course, he has always been our first choice as captain, and still is. Unfortunately, since there is uncertainty, we do not want to be in the midst of it. That’s why we don’t want to delay decisions. There is not much time left for the World Cup, so that the team can smoothly run; that’s why we have announced this name.”
Despite uncertainties surrounding Shakib, he remains in all three formats under the central contract for 2024.
