Nazmul Hossain Shanto Steps Down as Bangladesh Test Captain

In a major development for Bangladesh cricket, Nazmul Hossain Shanto has stepped down from his role as the Test captain. The decision came shortly after Bangladesh’s innings defeat to Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo, which ended the two-match series 1–0 in favor of the hosts.

Shanto confirmed his decision during the post-match press briefing, stating that he made the move for the betterment of the team. “I don’t want to continue as the Test captain anymore. I think this is the right time to step away for the sake of the team,” he said.

This announcement follows a challenging period for Shanto, who was also recently removed as ODI captain through a sudden decision by the selectors. That decision appears to have played a role in his choice to relinquish leadership in the longest format as well.

Despite stepping down, Shanto remains a key player in Bangladesh’s Test squad. He showed strong individual performances earlier in the series, including scoring centuries in the first Test. His departure from the leadership role now opens the door for new captaincy candidates, with all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz emerging as a likely successor.

Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to name a new Test captain officially.
