Matthew Mott has stepped down as the coach of England’s white-ball teams, leaving the Three Lions searching for a suitable successor.
The question on everyone’s mind is, who will take the position? Among many names, Eoin Morgan’s stands out prominently. However, Morgan himself wishes for the responsibility to be handed to Brendon McCullum, the current Test team coach.
Eoin Morgan, the captain who led England to their 2019 World Cup victory, is the pioneer of their first ODI title. Although he has retired from international cricket, the sport hasn’t left him. English fans wish to see their former captain as the head coach of the ODI and T20 teams.
Yet, Morgan believes McCullum is more suitable for the role than himself. He has provided reasons for his preference, stating, “McCullum is currently one of the world’s best coaches. Over the past few years, he has transformed the English Test team. He is well-versed with all the ECB’s procedures.”
Morgan further commented, “I don’t understand why Rob Key is looking outside when we have someone like McCullum at hand. I believe there is no one more qualified than McCullum for this team.”
Although McCullum has no international coaching experience in white-ball cricket, Morgan evaluates him based on his IPL performance. Morgan even suggests persuading McCullum to take the role if he is initially reluctant. “I have played under his coaching in the IPL. He is a fantastic coach in colored clothing. His understanding and knowledge of cricket are profound. Not assigning him this responsibility would be foolish on ECB’s part. If Brendon is hesitant to take the role, he needs to be convinced. Rob Key has a special duty here.”
It’s worth mentioning that McCullum is currently the head coach of England’s red-ball (Test) team. Under his leadership, the team has undergone a complete transformation, playing an aggressive style dubbed ‘Bazball.’ This approach has yielded significant results, with England winning 17 out of 25 Tests since he took over in 2022.
