Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been acquitted of rape charges prior to the T20 World Cup. He was detained in January last year for an alleged incident 8 years ago.
However, Lamichhane had appealed against that verdict in the High Court, which has now overturned the decision citing “insufficient evidence.”
Lamichhane is now free, and there’s a possibility of seeing this record-breaking bowler in the T20 World Cup, even representing the United States.
In 2022, this cricket star was embroiled in allegations of rape against a 18-year-old. At that time, he was playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
However, he had to surrender himself to the Kathmandu Police to face the allegations. Earlier this year, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison by the Kathmandu court. Lamichhane was granted bail, but he was under travel restrictions.
Later, an appeal was filed, which has now been successful, leading to the complete acquittal of the cricketer.
Nepal is in the same group as Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup. If Lamichhane joins the team, it will certainly be a headache for other teams.
