As cricket progresses, T20 cricket is becoming more popular. Viewers’ interest in seeing batsmen’s run-scoring fireworks is also increasing. As another T20 World Cup begins, many might wonder who has the most runs in the T20 World Cup.
In the last ICC T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli scored the most runs. He scored 296 runs in 6 matches, including four half-centuries. Not only that, but Kohli also has the most runs across all seven previous tournaments combined.
He first played in the 2012 World Cup. Since then, he has played 27 matches in six tournaments. Although he has never scored a century, Kohli has made 1,141 runs at an average of 81.50 and a strike rate of 131.30, with 14 fifties.
Apart from him, only one other batsman has more than a thousand runs in the T20 World Cup. In the 2014 World Cup, Mahela Jayawardene led Sri Lanka to the championship.
He scored 1,016 runs in 31 matches across four tournaments, with a strike rate of 134.74 and an average of 81.50. Jayawardene has one century and six half-centuries.
In third place on this list is ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle. He has scored 965 runs in 33 matches, with a strike rate of 142 and an average of 34.46. This T20 superstar has twice led the West Indies to the championship.
Among the top five, one player is still active. Rohit Sharma, who will lead India this time, has scored 963 runs in 39 matches. He is one of the two players to have played in all the T20 World Cups. Following him in fifth place is another Sri Lankan star, Tillakaratne Dilshan.
There is also one Bangladeshi in the top ten. Anyone should be able to guess the name. Besides Rohit, only one other player has played in all the T20 World Cups.
Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has scored 742 runs in 36 matches, with an average of 23.93 and a strike rate of 122.44. He is in eighth place on the list.
