Former West Indies captain Jason Holder has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to an injury sustained while playing for Worcestershire in the English County Championship.
In Holder’s absence, left-arm pacer Obed McCoy has been given a chance in the West Indies World Cup squad. McCoy took 5 wickets in the recently concluded three-match T20 series against South Africa at home.
So far, he has played 34 matches for the West Indies in this format and has taken 46 wickets. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has not clarified the nature of Holder’s injury or his recovery details.
Chief selector Desmond Haynes said, “Holder is an experienced player in our team. His absence will naturally affect us on and off the field. We are looking forward to having a fully fit Holder with us soon.” West Indies has announced the names of five reserve players along with the previously declared 15-member squad.
In the World Cup ‘Group C’, West Indies will face New Zealand, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda. The Caribbean team will start their World Cup campaign against Papua New Guinea on June 2.
