Only 2 days are left for the T20 World Cup. Discussions about who is the favorite and who might lift the trophy are prevalent at this time. According to former England captain Eoin Morgan, India is the strongest team in this year’s T20 World Cup.
Morgan, who led England to victory in the 2019 One-Day World Cup, believes that players like Rohit, Kohli, and Bumrah have the capability to easily defeat any team.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ podcast, Morgan said, “To me, India is the strongest team in the World Cup, even if they have injury issues throughout. Their strength and depth are incredible. We’re talking about the caliber of cricketers they have, and who has been left out of the 15-member squad. In my opinion, they are the favorites. On paper, India is very strong. If they can demonstrate this on the field, then I believe they can easily beat any team.”
For the opening partnership, India has included Yashasvi Jaiswal in the World Cup squad alongside Rohit Sharma. It is believed that Shubman Gill was left out to maintain the right-hand, left-hand combination in the opening.
However, if Morgan were the selector, he would have chosen Gill, saying, “I would have made only one decision differently. If I were selecting the team, I would have picked Shubman Gill instead of Yashasvi Jaiswal. I have played with him; I know how he thinks and works. I think he is also the future leader of this team.”
In the context of Morgan’s comments, former English captain Michael Atherton reminded everyone of India’s trophy drought. He said, “It’s an irony because everyone talks about the IPL and how it has transformed India’s T20 cricket. The irony is that India has won the T20 World Cup only once, and that was before the IPL started.”
India goes into any tournament as a favorite, but they have not been champions in any ICC-organized tournament in the last 11 years. The Champions Trophy won in 2013 is the last global title for the Indians.
