At the HPCA Stadium of Dharamshala, New Zealand started off from the batting side. The premature fall of top-order batters kept the Kiwis on edge. Both Ravindra and Mitchell played safe to produce a strong partnership. Their crucial 159 runs partnership ensured a safe team total of 273 runs for the Kiwis. Daryl Mitchell’s 130 runs innings did not come in handy as the Kiwis kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Mohammed Shami’s extraordinary bowling (5-54) buried any chances of the Kiwis scoring over 300 runs.
In contrast, India’s opening performance by Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill pointed towards an effortless victory. However, the Kiwi bowlers resisted vigorously as they slowly removed the top-order batters. Amidst the Kiwi bowling onslaught, Virat Kohli stood still and kept India in the chase. Jadeja and Kohli continued from where Rohit and Gill left off. Finally, Kohli’s pivotal innings of 95 runs logged the win for India.
