Slow Over Rates are nothing new in cricket; however, the current disciplinary action is too subtle and doesn’t encourage the fielding side to hurry things up. Currently, failing to bowl an Over within a specified time incurs a fine ranging from 5% to 50% of the match fee, too mild for the players to notice.
New Rules for Slow Over Rates
ICC’s new rules imply that failing to start over within 60 seconds of finishing one will result in a five runs bonus for the batting team if the same thing occurs three times in an innings. This rule will be effective in men’s ODI & T20I matches from December to April 2024.
To monitor such precise duration between each overs, the match officials will use a stop clock to keep track of time. Cricket, being a lengthy game, is experiencing a concerning decline in public interest. ICC is consistently experimenting with new rules to reduce the length of ODI cricket.
Alongside this regulation, the ICC will introduce significant amendments to other rules regarding pitch and outfield monitoring protocols. Furthermore, new agreements have been reached to ensure the safety and fairness of Women’s cricket. Additionally, discussions at the meeting have covered efforts to expedite equal pay for female umpires and match officials.
