ICC Announces ODI Team of the Year; No Indian Players Included
Based on individual performances in 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC), the highest governing body of world cricket, announced the ODI Team of the Year today.
No players from Bangladesh, India, Australia, England, South Africa, or New Zealand made it into the team. Instead, cricketers from four countries were selected for the best ODI XI of the year.
The team comprises players from three Asian nations—Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan—alongside one player from the West Indies. Sri Lanka leads with four players, followed by three each from Pakistan and Afghanistan, and one from the West Indies.
Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka has been named captain of the team, with Kusal Mendis as the wicketkeeper. Sri Lanka is further represented by Pathum Nissanka and Wanindu Hasaranga.
From Pakistan, opener Saim Ayub joins pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.
Afghanistan is represented by Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Azmatullah Omarzai, and AM Ghazanfar.
Sherfane Rutherford is the sole player representing the West Indies.
In the batting order, Saim Ayub and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are the openers, followed by Pathum Nissanka at number three.
The middle order is handled by Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Sherfane Rutherford. Azmatullah Omarzai serves as the pace-bowling all-rounder, while Wanindu Hasaranga is the spin-bowling all-rounder.
The two specialist pacers in the team are Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, with AM Ghazanfar as the lone specialist spinner.
