Sri Lankan cricketer Wanindu Hasaranga got involved in a controversy with the umpire. He made it clear to the umpire that he wants to leave this profession and pursue something else. This behavior of the Sri Lankan captain has certainly been criticized.
This incident occurred in the third and final match of the T20 series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka needed 19 runs in the last over after chasing 210 runs. In the first three balls, Kamindu Mendis hit two fours. Then Afghanistan’s Waqar Salamkheil bowled a ball higher than the waist. But the square leg umpire did not call it a no-ball. Sri Lanka’s appeal was rejected. Hasaranga was not happy with the decision at all.
After losing by 3 runs, Hasaranga strongly criticized the umpiring. He said, it’s not right at all to have such incidents in international matches. The ball was not a problem when it was close to the stumps. But even though the ball was high, it wasn’t called a no-ball. And if it had been a little higher, it could have hit the batsman’s head. If they can’t see that, then they shouldn’t umpire international cricket matches like this. It’s appropriate for them to find another job.
Kamindu Mendis wanted to review the fourth delivery by Salamkheil, which was not called a no-ball by the umpire. But in the current playing conditions of the ICC, there is no opportunity for it. Players cannot review umpire decisions unless they are directly involved in the dismissal. Even if there is no chance of a dismissal, on-field umpires cannot seek TV umpire assistance for a waist-high no-ball.
