There has already been buzz in the cricketing world that the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will bring surprises. Now, the official announcement has arrived. Three new franchises will be introduced in the new season. However, the most successful team, Comilla Victorians, will not be part of it.
On Thursday, an important meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Several major decisions were made there, with the central focus being on organizing the BPL.
The 11th edition of the BPL is set to take place at the end of this year. For the first time, the tournament will be held under the new Board of Directors of the BCB. BCB aims to restructure the event, which has often been the subject of controversy.
To ensure that the tournament is held above all controversy, the directors discussed various matters. After the meeting, BCB president Faruk Ahmed summarized the plans in a press conference.
The BCB chief said, “We have discussed the BPL. Three teams have been changed. Some rules and regulations were also discussed. Everything will be finalized within one or two days.”
Faruk also provided some clarity on which franchises are changing. He said, “The previous teams Comilla, Duronto Dhaka, and Chattogram Challengers will not be part of this year’s BPL. However, Rajshahi, which played in earlier seasons, will return. Additionally, new management will bring back teams from Dhaka and Chattogram.”
He further added, “The Dhaka team might be named ‘Dhaka Nawab’. As for Chattogram, an old franchise that played in the first or second season is returning. A team from Rajshahi has also expressed interest in playing. We have selected three teams.”
Meanwhile, following the recent political changes in the country, the future of the BPL was uncertain. There was also doubt about when the tournament would start. However, Faruk Ahmed confirmed the dates for the BPL and the player draft. He said, “The draft will take place on October 14, and the tournament will begin on December 27.”
