Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed doubts about star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma making it to the main squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, considering their current status.
He said, “With age, the opportunities to play decrease, and maintaining fitness becomes tougher. At the start of the 2027 World Cup, Kohli will be 38 and Rohit will be nearly 40. So, sustaining long-term performance in the ODI format will be a challenge.”
India is scheduled to play 27 matches in nine upcoming bilateral ODI series organized by the Indian cricket board. According to Ganguly, maintaining form across 15 matches in a year will not be easy.
Ganguly stated, “We have to understand that at some point, the game will move on from them. Playing just 15 matches this year and expecting to make the World Cup squad will be tough.” He added, “Kohli and Rohit themselves understand the game well; they have the right to make their own decisions. I don’t have any specific advice for them.”
Currently, Kohli has scored over 27,000 international runs with 82 centuries, while Rohit has accumulated nearly 20,000 runs and 49 centuries.
