Former Zimbabwean Cricketer Meman Passes Away

Mohammed Ahmed Meman, a beloved figure deeply associated with Zimbabwean cricket, has passed away. Known affectionately as “Babu,” the former cricketer and team manager breathed his last in Leicester, England, at the age of 73. He had been ill for a long time.

In the world of cricket, he was widely known as “Babu Meman.” Although he played only one international match — representing Zimbabwe against India in the 1987 World Cup — his influence in domestic cricket was significant. As an off-spinning all-rounder, he played extensively in Zimbabwe’s domestic league and in England’s Minor County cricket.

Beyond his cricketing identity, Meman is best remembered for his role as the manager of the Zimbabwe national team. From Zimbabwe’s debut in Test cricket in 1992 up to 2006, he was a constant presence with the team for nearly a decade and a half. His contributions both on and off the field were invaluable. He later served as a selector for the national team as well.

The Zimbabwe Cricket Board has expressed deep sorrow at his passing. In a statement, they said:
“Babu’s enduring contributions to Zimbabwean cricket will never be forgotten. His passion, humility, and dedication — both on and off the field — will forever be remembered by those who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Aisha, children Iqbal, Fazila, and Sadia, and to the rest of his family.”
