Fixing Scandal: Three South African Cricketers Arrested

Three South African cricketers have been arrested in connection with a match-fixing scandal. The incident stems from the 2015-16 T20 Ram Slam Challenge tournament. Among those arrested, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Thami Tsolekile have played international cricket for South Africa, while Ethy Mbhalati does not have such experience.

South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) arrested the three cricketers nearly eight years after the fixing allegations surfaced. However, they were apprehended at different times. Mbhalati was arrested on November 18, while Tsolekile and Tsotsobe were taken into custody on November 28 and 29, respectively.

The DPCI had previously published a shocking report on the match-fixing scandal in October 2016, following which all three players were barred from participating in cricket. Earlier this year, Mbhalati’s case was postponed in the Pretoria Special Commercial Crimes Court until February 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, Tsolekile and Tsotsobe faced charges under five different provisions of South Africa’s 2004 Corruption Act.
