Former English cricketer Graham Thorpe passed away on August 5. Although his death was initially considered ‘natural,’ it has now been revealed that the cause of death was far from pleasant—Graham Thorpe committed suicide.
In an interview with the British media outlet ‘The Times,’ Thorpe’s wife disclosed that he had been suffering from depression and anxiety for several years. It is believed that these mental health struggles ultimately led him to take his own life.
After retiring from his playing career, Thorpe served as England’s assistant coach for some time. However, in 2022, when he was set to become Afghanistan’s head coach, it was reported that he had been hospitalized with a serious illness.
It has now come to light that Thorpe was not actually ill but had made his first suicide attempt at that time. Thorpe’s wife said, “In May 2022, he made a serious attempt to take his own life. He had to stay in the ICU for an extended period after that.” She mentioned that after being discharged from the hospital, Thorpe had shown signs of recovery. However, his mental health deteriorated again after some time. Thorpe’s daughter Kitty said the family had tried hard to help him recover. Kitty added, “We were trying to help him get better, to protect him. That’s why we didn’t say anything.”
The family is also considering establishing a foundation in Thorpe’s name. Thorpe was a very prominent cricketer. He played 100 Test matches and 82 ODIs for England, scoring 6,744 runs in Tests and 2,380 runs in ODIs.
