England stops the Aussies and makes a comeback in the series

England stops the Aussies and makes a comeback in the series. England fought back in a do-or-die battle and kept their hopes alive for a series victory. After two consecutive defeats, they finally tasted victory. On the other hand, Australia’s 14-match winning streak in ODIs came to an end.

Australia had taken a strong lead by winning the first two matches of the five-match ODI series. A win in Tuesday’s third match would have secured the series for them. However, they couldn’t close the deal as England stood in their way.

On Tuesday, England defeated Australia by 46 runs via the DLS method at Chester-le-Street. Batting first, Australia posted 304 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. According to the DLS method, England’s revised target was 254 runs in 37.4 overs, which they achieved for the loss of 4 wickets, securing a 46-run win. Harry Brook scored a century.

After losing the toss and being sent to bat, Australia crossed the 300-run mark through a team effort. Although openers Matthew Short (14) and Mitchell Marsh (24) couldn’t capitalize on their starts, Steven Smith, batting at number three, led the way. He and Cameron Green added 84 runs.

After Green was dismissed for 42, Smith added another 40 runs with Alex Carey. The partnership was broken when Smith was dismissed after scoring 60 off 82 balls, falling to Archer. Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for a duck in the middle order, but Carey continued to guide the team.

Carey was well supported by Glenn Maxwell (30) and Aaron Hardie. Hardie played a destructive 44-run knock off 26 balls. Carey remained unbeaten with 77 runs off 65 balls. Archer took two wickets to restrict Australia to 304.

In reply, England lost their openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett for just 11 runs, both dismissed by Mitchell Starc. However, Will Jacks and Harry Brook weathered the pressure and built a massive third-wicket partnership, adding 156 runs off 148 balls.

Jacks was dismissed for 84 off 82 balls, but Brook completed his century. He remained unbeaten on 110 runs off 94 balls to secure the win. Liam Livingstone contributed an unbeaten 33 off 20 balls, while Jamie Smith was dismissed for 7 runs.

Despite the win, Australia still leads the series 2-1. However, this loss makes things tougher for Australia. This defeat also marked Australia’s first ODI loss since the 2023 World Cup, ending their 14-match winning streak.
