Context Behind the Sarcastic Posts

After getting dismissed for exceeding the time limit to face bowlers on the pitch, Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews was given “Timed Out” by the umpires. This happened on the 6th of November during Sri Lanka’s match against Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi captain, Shakib Al Hasan, appealed for a dismissal to the umpires after noticing Angelo’s late arrival on the field. Taking the appeal into consideration, the umpires charged Angelo with a “Timed Out” dismissal, sending him back to the pavilion.

Angelo Mathews is now the only player in international cricket history to get dismissed under the MCC Rule 40.1.1, simply known as “Timed Out.”

The reason behind the sarcastic approach

However, Delhi Police & Odisha Road Transport Authority have highlighted the helmet mishap of Angelo, which happened to cost him even more time on the pitch.  Angelo apparently walked in with a malfunctioning helmet; upon realizing the issue, he wanted to have it replaced. Exactly at that moment, the appeal from Shakib was issued to the umpires, resulting in the fall of his wicket.

Sarcastically, Delhi Police stated, “Delhitees! We hope now you have understood the importance of a ‘HELMET’.” Odisha Road Transport Authority, on the other hand, captioned, “Don’t throw away your wicket, play a consistent long innings. Always wear ISI certified helmet & tie the strap. Also encourage pillion rider to do so.”

Both handles brought forward the helmet mishap issue of Angelo to encourage people to wear good-quality helmets. Furthermore, Road accidents in India claimed the lives of 1,68,491 people in 2022. Therefore, it’s understandable why the Delhi Police & Odisha Road Transport Authority encouraged people to wear helmets and maintain safety standards.
