A match between Australia and England will take place to mark the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. This special match, featuring traditional white clothing, will be a day-night Test and will be played with a pink ball at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2027. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the news in a statement.
In 1877, England and Australia played the first-ever Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In that timeless Test, Australia won by 45 runs. A special Test was also organized in 1977 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Test cricket, and coincidentally, Australia won that match by the same margin of 45 runs.
The milestone Test match will take place at this historic venue in March 2027. Cricket Australia has decided to make it a day-night Test primarily to attract more spectators to the stadium.
CA Chief Executive Todd Greenberg said, “The 150th anniversary Test at the MCG will be one of the biggest events in cricket. Playing under floodlights will be a celebration of our game’s rich heritage and the modern evolution of Test cricket. This decision will also ensure a greater audience presence for this special occasion.”
Usually, Test matches are not held at the MCG in March. However, the pink-ball day-night Test between Australia and England is scheduled to be played from March 11 to 15, 2027. Naturally, the match is expected to generate significant excitement among fans.
