Afghanistan will play their first match against Uganda in Guyana on June 4th in the T20 World Cup. They dream of winning the World Cup. Can the Afghans do it? The Afghan cricket team, with an average age of 25 years, surprised the world in the One Day International (ODI) World Cup.
After a great performance in the ODI World Cup, the Afghans have promised their supporters to give their best in the mega event of T20 cricket as well.
Last October, the skies of Kabul were lit up with fireworks after Afghanistan’s fantastic 8-wicket victory against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup. Afghanistan finished the World Cup in a better position than the 2019 champions, England.
The Afghans, who finished sixth in the World Cup, also defeated the English team. There is a possibility that they will surprise everyone in the upcoming T20 World Cup starting in the United States and West Indies.
From the ongoing practice camp in the West Indies, 22-year-old Sedikullah Atal told the news agency AFP over the phone, ‘In the past, when we used to defeat big teams, our victory was called an ‘upset.’ The left-handed opener further said, ‘The word ‘upset’ is no longer in our dictionary because we have now made our place among the favorites. We are no less than any team.’
Afghanistan has spent decades in war, but the country’s passion for cricket has never ended. 20-year-old all-rounder Nangialai Kharote said, ‘When you have the support of 40 million people and they inspire you, it feels much more joyful.’
Before departing for the West Indies, he told AFP in Kabul, ‘Representing your own country is much more joyful if the expectations of the supporters remain the same. Receiving love from Afghan supporters at home and abroad is extraordinary.’
