Bangladesh suffered a 77-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the first ODI. Chasing a target of 244 at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s team was bowled out for 167 in 35.5 overs.
Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. Tanzim Sakib struck the first blow by dismissing Pathum Nissanka (0), who was caught by wicketkeeper Liton Das. After that, Sri Lanka lost three more wickets for just 24 runs, two of which were taken by Taskin Ahmed.
From there, Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka tried to rebuild the innings. Together, they took the team’s score to 89. Debutant left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam broke the partnership by removing Kusal for 45 off 43 balls.
Later, Asalanka partnered with Janith Liyanage to push Sri Lanka past 150. That partnership ended when Liyanage, who scored 29, was dismissed by part-time spinner Najmul Hossain Shanto. Sri Lanka then managed two more small partnerships, with Asalanka playing the key role in both. Milan Rathnayake and Wanindu Hasaranga each contributed 22 runs.
In the final stages, Asalanka single-handedly carried the innings and brought up a brilliant century. Tanzim eventually dismissed him for 106 in the final over, and Sri Lanka’s innings ended at 244.
In reply, Bangladesh got off to a solid start, reaching 100 for the loss of just one wicket. However, things fell apart quickly as Sri Lanka’s spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis ran riot.
From 100/1, Bangladesh collapsed to 105/8 — losing seven wickets for just five runs. After Najmul Hossain was run out, Liton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Taskin Ahmed all followed in quick succession.
Zakir Ali and Tanvir Islam tried to resist, but Tanvir was dismissed for 5 off 19 balls. The ninth wicket fell at 125. Zakir then tried to carry on with Mustafizur Rahman, but the stand didn’t last long. The innings ended at 167.
Tanzid Hasan was the top scorer for Bangladesh with 62 runs, followed by Zakir Ali with 51.
