It seems that every match brings new records for Shakib Al Hasan. Whenever he steps onto the field, the potential for new achievements arises. As Bangladesh prepares to face India, it’s no different. A rare record is calling his name.
Bangladesh is currently in India to play a two-match Test series. During this series, which started on September 19, Shakib Al Hasan is on the verge of setting an incredible record. He is just eight wickets away from becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to reach the milestone of 250 wickets in Test cricket.
Achieving this feat would not only be a remarkable moment for Bangladeshi cricket but would also place Shakib in an exclusive club in the 147-year history of Test cricket. It’s not just any club but one that includes players who have scored 4,000 runs and taken 250 wickets in Tests.
So far, only four players are members of this elite club. Shakib has already fulfilled the run requirement, having scored 4,543 runs in 69 Tests. With 242 wickets to his name, he needs just eight more wickets in the two Tests against India to join Sir Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Jacques Kallis, and Daniel Vettori in this distinguished group.
Ian Botham was the first to achieve this milestone, doing so in just 69 matches. Shakib had a chance to surpass him, but missed the opportunity when Bangladesh lost 11 Tests by an innings margin. Otherwise, he would have already claimed this record.
Now, Shakib has a great chance to secure second place in the list. Kapil Dev achieved 4,000 runs and 250 wickets in 97 Tests, Kallis in 127 Tests, and Vettori in 101 Tests.
Although his recent batting form hasn’t been great, Shakib has been impressive with the ball. He played a key role in Bangladesh’s victory against Pakistan, and later took 9 wickets in two innings while playing for Surrey in the County Championship.
All things considered, Shakib Al Hasan has an excellent chance to reach this milestone in the upcoming matches against India.
