For the first time since taking charge as the new captain of India’s One Day International team, Shubman Gill has spoken publicly. Recently, Gill took over the ODI leadership baton from Rohit Sharma. Speaking at a press conference just before the second Test against the West Indies, the young cricketer praised his predecessor Rohit Sharma’s leadership qualities in glowing terms.
Regarding the leadership change, Gill said that he learned about the decision shortly before it was officially announced by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar at a press conference.
Excited about his new role, Gill said,
“The announcement came during the Test match, but I found out a little earlier. Of course, it’s a huge responsibility and an even bigger honor. I’m thrilled to lead my country in this format. The past few months have been really exciting for me.”
Having recently started his captaincy stint in Test cricket, Shubman Gill will now lead the team in ODIs as well. He expressed his eagerness to prove himself across all three formats and to win everything possible for India.
“I’m looking forward to the future. I want to stay as present as possible and not dwell on what we or I have achieved so far. I just want to keep looking ahead and aim to win everything that’s coming our way in the upcoming months.”
Rohit Sharma will no longer be Gill’s teammate in Tests or T20Is, but he will be alongside him in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Gill candidly admitted that he has learned a lot from Rohit’s leadership—whether it’s his calm demeanor on the field or his ability to create a friendly atmosphere within the team.
“I’ve learned a lot from Rohit bhai. One of the main things is his composure and the kind of camaraderie he builds within the team—it truly inspires me. I want to carry those qualities forward.”
