India captain Shubman Gill is setting one record after another in the ongoing Test at Edgbaston. After a magnificent double century of 269 runs in the first innings, he followed it up with a century in the second innings, etching his name into the golden pages of Test cricket history.
Gill became only the second Indian batter in history to score both a double century and a century in the same Test match.
On the fourth day (July 5), India lost two early wickets in their second innings. That’s when captain Gill came to the crease. Just like in the first innings, he batted with confidence, frustrating the English bowlers and reaching his eighth Test century in just 129 balls. This was his third century of the series and fifth overall against England.
With this feat, Gill matched a 54-year-old record held by Sunil Gavaskar. In 1971, Gavaskar had scored 124 and 220 runs in a Test match against the West Indies. Until now, he was the only Indian to achieve this feat.
In the history of world cricket, only 9 batters have ever scored both a double century and a century in the same Test match. Shubman Gill is now the ninth name on that elite list.
With this innings, Gill not only achieved a rare record but also broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian Test captain. Kohli’s highest was 254, while Gill went past it with his 269-run knock.
