Shubman Gill is getting grilled by fans on Social Media

The 24-year-old Indian opener Shubman Gill is facing the fire & fury of Indian cricket fans on social platforms. On the biggest showdown of cricket last night, Gill failed to make any impact with his bat as Australia emerged victorious.

Fans troll Shubman Gill on X

Shubman Gill’s role as an opener had been about assisting Rohit Sharma on the pitch and occasionally pulling off big shots. In the previous 10 matches, Gill has been proactive in the field with four half-centuries. Gill’s crucial innings of 80 runs contributed a lot toward India’s dominant total of 397 against New Zealand in the Semifinal. His best (97) was against Sri Lanka in the group stage.

That's why Gill and Iyer can never become Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.#INDvsAUSfinal | KL Rahul | Surya | Gill | Narendra Modi | #INDvsAUS | #CWC23Final | #WorldCup2023 pic.twitter.com/RvTSpPotR4

Under the pressure of 1,32,000 spectators, it was pretty apparent that Gill didn’t feel comfortable on the pitch yesterday. Gill’s presence on the field indicated his nervousness from the beginning. After just scoring 4 runs off 7 balls, Gill fell for a very ordinary short ball trap from Mitchell Starc. Consequently, Gill was forced to take the shot from an uneasy stance, resulting in an easy catch for Adam Zampa at the mid on.

For his premature dismissal at the 5th Over, India stood at 30/1, not an ideal opening score for a World Cup final match. Later on, India lost the game by 6 wickets, and Australia packed their 6th Men’s ODI World Cup Title. Subsequently, Indian fans have made Shubman Gill the center of discussion, as #Gill is now trending on X with more than 80,000 posts.

The fact that Mr. ICC had an amazing IPL and Ind still played Shubman Gill over him is shameful. pic.twitter.com/FyUl1CthKo

While some are showing sympathy for the youngster, others point out his inability to perform at the big stages. Additionally, some are comparing his performance at IPL to his performance for his country. Furthermore, a small number of “fans” are leaving hateful remarks to express their anger. Nonetheless, Shubman Gill hasn’t addressed anything about his performance or the social media trolls targeted towards him.
