Rohit and Ponting Support Bangladeshi Umpire’s Decision

India suffered a heavy defeat in the Boxing Day Test. Despite the conclusion of the match, debates surrounding it have lingered. On the fifth day of the Test, a decision by Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat sparked discussions.

Although the Snickometer didn’t detect any edge during the appeal for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal, the Bangladeshi umpire judged him out based on a visible change in the ball’s trajectory. At a time when Indian batters were losing wickets rapidly under the onslaught of Australian pacers, Jaiswal was keeping India in the game. He scored 84 runs.

However, in such a critical situation, the third umpire, Sharfuddoula, made a bold decision, and Jaiswal was sent back.

During the post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma was asked about Jaiswal’s dismissal. The Indian captain replied, “I don’t know what to say about this. The technology didn’t show anything, but to the naked eye, it seemed like he (Jaiswal) had nicked it. I’m not sure how the umpires use technology, but in the interest of fairness, I feel he did touch the ball.”

Rohit further added, “We know technology isn’t 100% accurate. Most of the time, we are on the receiving end of its errors… Here too, we were unlucky.”

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting also supported the Bangladeshi umpire’s decision. He stated, “No matter how they analyze it, the ball clearly touched the glove. I noticed it instantly. Jaiswal had also started walking. Even though Snicko couldn’t confirm it, the replays showed the ball brushing the glove. In my opinion, there’s no room for controversy here.”
